Background: Angkor Microfinance Kampuchea (AMK) is an MFI working in rural Cambodia to provide financial services to low-income households, and originated from the Concern Worldwide’s programs in the country. AMK became an independent MFI in 2003 and aims to reach 300,000 + clients by March 2010. AMK is the fastest growing MFI in Cambodia (in terms of clients) and in 2007 doubled their number of clients nearly exceeding their goal for 2008.
Leadership: AMK is lead by CEO Paul Luchtenburg who from a base of Cambodia has supported numerous organizations in microfinance in Europe and Asia for more than 15 years.
Product offerings and clientele: AMK focuses on the rural poor and has designed products to help finance their livelihoods—loans are available for both farming and non-farming activity. Most popular is their 24-month credit line product that allows a client to borrow and repay principal at any point during the cycle.
Highlights and growth strategy: AMK is exploring transformation to a bank which will allow for deposit taking in the future. It is also in discussion with a leading international bank to pilot remittance and mobile banking technology. Unitus is supporting AMK with MIS advisory and strategic advisory on transformation.
