AFRICA MICROFINANCE GROWTH CENTRE
Unitus has begun work on the Africa Microfinance Growth Centre, an 18-month leadership development programme for CEOs of microfinance institutions (MFIs), designed to help MFIs grow by improving strategy, leadership skills, and execution ability. The Growth Centre, a Unitus and FSD partnership, seeks to rapidly expand the financial services available to low income families with an initial focus on Kenya and Tanzania.
The 18-month program is designed to empower CEOs to overcome key barriers to growth and ultimately impact more low-income families through improved strategy, leadership skills, and execution ability. Key programme components include:
- Leadership and Growth Workshops
- Functional Training (e.g. technology, capital raising)
- On-Site Strategic Planning Session
- Access to a Dynamic Peer Network
Off-site workshops and trainings will be held in both Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. The Africa Microfinance Growth Centre is made possible through the financial support of FSDK, Omidyar Network, The Boeing Company, and SV2: Silicon Valley Social Venture Fund.
Unitus accepted applications from the CEOs of entrepreneurial, early-stage MFIs in Kenya and Tanzania that serve low-income households, have aggressive growth targets and focus on sustainability from April 15, 2009 to May 08, 2009. Potential participants included any institution providing financial services to the poor, including NGOs, non banking finance companies, SACCOs, and other providers. Unitus is currently working on reviewing and screening applicants; workshops and trainings are scheduled to start in late July 2009.
