PARTNERS
Participant Selection
Unitus began approaching partners in early 2008 to gauge interest and identify challenges in adopting an SPM program, initially focusing on more mature partners (those with greater operational and financial stability). Participation is voluntary, and we have found that the more MFIs learn about SPM’s impact, the more willing they are to fully embrace the project.
Ujjivan
Ujjivan, a Unitus partner since 2006, was selected as the first microfinance institution (MFI) to participate in the Social Performance Management Implementation Project.
“Initial projects we had done in monitoring and evaluating the impact of microfinance on the lives of our clients revealed some very interesting—and sometimes surprising—outcomes,” commented Mr. Samit Ghosh of Ujjivan. “We’re excited to take this opportunity to continue that survey work and to use the findings to tailor our services to better serve our clients.”
In the first phase, Unitus is working with Ujjivan to conduct analysis of existing social performance data, collect client-level data using the Grameen Foundation Progress out of Poverty Index™ (PPI™), and conduct an internal social audit using the CERISE Social Performance Indicator (SPI). Ujjivan and Unitus expect to complete this early in 2010.
